How to Choose an AI Product Photography Tool: 10 Questions to Ask

A practical evaluation guide for e-commerce brands comparing AI product photography platforms — what to test, what to ask, and what to watch out for.

The market for AI product photography tools has grown quickly, and not all of them are equally suited for e-commerce use cases. Before committing to any platform, run it through this evaluation. The right tool for a brand generating 50 images a month is different from one generating 5,000.

1. How accurately does it reproduce product colors and textures? This is the most important question. Generate test images of products with complex patterns, bold colors, or distinctive textures. Compare the output to the original product carefully. Color drift or texture loss is a dealbreaker for e-commerce use.

2. What is the output quality at PDP scale? Generate test images and view them at the actual size they'll appear on your product listing page. Quality issues that are invisible at thumbnail size become obvious at full size.

3. Does it support batch generation? For any catalog of meaningful size, you need to be able to queue and process multiple products simultaneously. Single-image generation workflows don't scale.

4. Can you save and reuse prompts? Reusable prompt templates are essential for catalog consistency. If every generation requires starting from scratch, you'll struggle to maintain a coherent visual system.

5. What are the output dimensions and format options? Verify that the tool can output at the specifications your platform requires. For Shopify, that's typically 2048x2048px. For Amazon, different size requirements apply.

6. What is the generation speed? Time is a real cost. A tool that takes 5 minutes per image is a bottleneck at volume. The fastest tools generate in seconds.

7. What does quality failure look like? Every AI tool produces bad outputs occasionally. Understand what the failure modes look like — wrong colors, strange proportions, missing details — so you know what to screen for in your review process.

8. How is pricing structured? Most tools charge per image or per credit. Run the math against your actual volume. A tool with a low per-image cost but a high minimum commitment may be more expensive than it looks for smaller brands.

9. What level of control do you have over the output? Basic tools give you a prompt box. Better tools let you control model parameters, lighting, background, and styling independently.

10. What does the review and regeneration workflow look like? No AI tool is perfect. The ease of flagging and regenerating bad outputs is a significant factor in your actual cost per usable image.
